Calgary is at the center of Canada's oil and gas industry and is home to 87% of Canada's oil and natural gas producers and 66% of coal producers, including BP, EnCana, Imperial Oil, Petro-Canada, Shell and Suncor Energy. The oil sands in Northern Alberta make Alberta's proven petroleum reserves the second largest in the world.

Calgary is a vibrant city of that offers the best of all worlds. It is a cosmopolitan city of over one million people and wilderness and outdoor adventure are less than a hour away in the Canadian Rockies. Although winters in Calgary can be quite cold, the weather in June is an extremely pleasant with an average temperature of 20°C and little rainfall.

Banff National Park is set in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, attracts roughly 4 million visitors each year and is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Banff town site possesses a wide range of facilities including everything from arts and fine dining to rugged outdoor activities.

Although Calgary is well-known as a destination for ecotourism it is also one of Canada's most diverse cities. In addition to the typical wide range of cultural activities available in a large cosmopolitan city, Calgary has maintained its western heritage in festivals like the world famous Calgary Stampede and cowboy themed saloons.

The University of Calgary, the conference venue, is a world renowned centre for oil and gas research, with many labs dedicated to Petroleum Microbiology. It is home to the Petroleum Microbiology Research Group, ISEEE (the Institute of Energy, Environment and Economy) and the lead institution for the Hydrocarbon Metagenomics Project, the UofC has a proud history in oilfield research and development with outstanding accomplishments in understanding the role of organisms in the diagenesis of oil, development of fire flooding and SAGD processes.

In addition to the ISMOS-3 conference your visit to Calgary could be a great opportunity to explore the culture of Calgary, or take optional tours to see the natural beauty of Banff or the impressive scale of Alberta's oil sands.
